THE NEXT 50 YEARS!!!!

Hello!

Book TV last night had speakers about the supreme court. I've and read this before, but it bears repeating: There are potentially three justices close to or ready to retire. Two of them are reportedly not especially happy on the court and may be ready to get off, but are just waiting for Barack to get into office. Depending on the age of the appointees, we could be talking about the next 50 years of rulings! (as if we didn't have enough motivation!!!:-)

That is very interesting, looking at possible implications. You say that they are waiting for Obama to come into office...

Perhaps they may be waiting for the next Democrat to be elected, however I cringe at the thought of them retiring (a) during the McCain Administration if we are so unfortunate as to elect him or (b) end up retiring during the next Republican administration if Obama is elected this go.

I say this because I am wondering *which* justices are thinking of stepping down. If they are the more liberal judges, then we will be in the same situation as we are now: a precarious one. One more conservative judicial seat and the court shifts dramatically. This seems the more likely of cases as you said they were waiting for Obama in particular to be elected.

Even if we replace two or three liberal judges in the near future, sustaining the present court dynamic, there are three or four [sorry, been a while since I have brushed up on the court] conservative judges who could die a natural, "early" death. God forbid that happening when a republican is president... again.

I guess you could say that I am less excited by this news and more cautious. Let's just get Obama elected. McCain brings even more threat to our freedoms than ever now.
